STUCKEY BROTHERS AND JULIA RICK CLAIM NAUTIQUE WWA WAKE PARK WORLD TITLES

Last weekend wake park athletes from all across the globe descended upon the Orlando Watersports Complex to compete against one another in the 2021 Nautique WWA Wake Park World Championships.  Countries represented in the international competition were the United States, Brazil, Canada, Portugal, Sweden, Germany, Iran, Hungary, England, Argentina, and Japan.  Through three days of competition in both the Traditional and Features Only formats, wakeboarders and wakeskaters fought hard for their opportunity to become the best in the world among their division.

In the Traditional format, where each athlete gets one lap on the cable by themselves, Florida riders dominated the amateur podiums.  For the Jr. Boys, Boys, and Jr. Men divisions Evan Cole (Elite Cable Park), Isaic Claudio (Nona Adventure Park) and Donny Graves (Shark Wake Park 561) took the wins in their respective divisions.  For the women, Campbell Scarborough from OWC defeated the Texan, Lacy Carlton, in the Girls 10-14 division with her signature tail grabbed back roll off the kicker and her high flying air tricks, while her older OWC teammate Payton Gibney took the win in the Jr. Women’s division with her technical rail riding on the pool gap and the Nessie rail.  Similar results came to fruition in the amateur Features Only format with Evan Cole, Isaic Claudio, and Jaden Garcia (Nona Adventure Park) topping the podium in the Groms Features, Kids Features, and Juniors Features divisions respectively.  

In the Jr. Pro divisions Swedish rider Hugo Randow bested Colby Zebarth and Labryn Depta in the Jr. Pro Features final with his variations of spins and inverts on the kickers and his incredibly difficult rail hits that gave his the narrow margin of victory.  For the Jr. Pro Traditional final it was Colby Zebarth from West Palm, Florida with his massive air tricks that made him victorious over Tyler Cole and Hugo Randow.

Julia Rick reclaimed her double World Champion titles after missing last year’s Wake Park World Championship due to the pandemic.  The 28 year old German won both the Traditional and Features Only titles back in 2019 and this year she once again proved to be the best the in world at both disciplines.  Her incredible aerial aptitude and her fearlessness on the rail features set her apart from the other riders and elevated her onto the top of both podiums.  In both Traditional and Features Only, Meagan Ethell would receive 2nd place, while Taylor McCullough would take third in Traditional and Annie Best took 3rd in Features Only.

The main story for the weekend was the unbelievable talent of the entire Stuckey family as they claimed four World Championship titles for their household.  Shannon “Mama” Stuckey took the win in the Masters Women Traditional division while her husband Jason rode to victory in the Veterans Features Only division.  And in the Pro divisions it was a full-on Stuckey showdown between the brothers Trent (17) and Gavin (15).  In the Pro Men Traditional division, Trent would emerge victorious with his double grabbed heel 900, his crossed-up method grab on his air front-to-blind, and a tail grabbed frontroll into the pool gap.  Guenther Oka would follow close behind in second place and Fynn Bullock would trail in third.  In Pro Men Features Only, young Gavin Stuckey would become the star of the show with his toeside roll-to-blind into Nessie’s bank and his mind-blowing KGB 720.  Gavin won with a 94.30, followed by his older brother who scored a 92.01, and Fynn Bullock rounded out the podium with a 79.56.  In addition to the weekend’s events, Trent Stuckey claimed both the Traditional and Features Only Wake Park World Series titles, making him the youngest rider to ever claim both overall titles.

Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championships & Nautique Wakesurf Masters Championships – Event Social Distancing Protocol

WWA SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES

Due to a recent rise in cases, The WWA is implementing additional measures & social distancing guidelines effective at all WWA produced events in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.  Events are only possible if we all maintain the federal, CDC, state and local guidelines. We appreciate everyone doing their part so our events are able to operate and do not get shut down.

OVERVIEW

The WWA will adhere to and operate in compliance with all public health authorities and local and state government guidelines regarding social distancing pertinent to the location of the event being held. In adhering to compliant efforts onsite, event crowd numbers will not exceed the guidelines currently set forth. The WWA will provide masks to all event participants and advise that any event bystanders are wearing masks when electing to be in the vicinity of the event grounds and will be strictly advised to not congregate in large groups.

High-risk individuals, including older adults and people with pre-existing medical conditions that appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus are recommended to avoid events involving groups at this time and/or to take all recommended precautions to protect themselves.

EVENT PROTOCOL 

• All WWA staff will be required to wear face-masks when interacting with riders or general public.
• The starting dock areas will be limited to the dock starter and ONE heat at a time in order to avoid unnecessary congregations of people. There will also be ‘staging’ areas outside of the dock that only the upcoming heat will be allowed in. Riders 9 & under may have one parent with a face covering accompany them on a dock. Participants should be aware of signage stating the number of individuals allowed in areas. Riders who do not follow the dock area protocols will be subject to disqualification.
• Participants will NOT be able to store their equipment in the start dock area and are advised to keep equipment with them or in their locked vehicle at all times.
• Only event staff will be allowed in the judges or announcer areas during the event.
• All WWA staff will monitor and enforce social distancing policies throughout the duration of the event.
• All event surfaces and high-touch areas will be wiped down and disinfected daily.
• In order to avoid extended face-to-face interaction between event participants and staff, participants must complete all necessary event and registration paperwork prior to arriving to the event site and attempting to check-in at the registration area. 
• All event participants are advised to avoid person-to-person contact such as shaking hands. 
• All event participants will be advised to not congregate in large groups of people to socialize while at the event site.

Composition Overview – Wake Park

COMPOSITION JUDGE (WAKE PARK)

The score in this category is the riders overall usage of the course. How did the rider incorporate the features with flat tricks, while producing the best variety of maneuvers possible. Composition is how the rider made the whole run flow from start to finish looking at variety, flow and creativity. Some questions a judge would consider when formulating a score for this category are as follows:

1. Was there a good balance of feature and rail tricks?
2. Did the rider do handle passed tricks and/or land wrapped?
3. Did the rider have variations of grabs?
4. Did the rider have variations of spin rotations (clockwise vs. counter-clockwise)?
5. Who linked tricks, and features together better?
6. Did they put flat tricks between the features to maximize the run or did they pass upfeatures to do flat tricks?

6. Did the riders have their course planned out, and did the tricks flow from one toanother easily?
7. Who had more grabs, tweaks, off-axis, switch, backside, and noticeableuniqueness?

9. Where did the rider put the hardest trick in their pass?
10. Was there any wasted course space? Was the entire length of course used to full

potential?

D.R.I.V.E. Format Overview

D   –   difficulty

R   –  risk

I    –   intensity

V   –  variety

E    –   execution

Difficulty:
Trick difficulty (Technical Difficulty) – This is simply defined as how difficult each trick is based on a number of variables. Spins, carves, turns, airs, grabbing your board and the way a rider lands all subjectively define how difficult certain tricks are in comparison to others.

• Number of rotations
• Combos (combining tricks, adding spins, grabs etc)
• The direction a rider spins in relation to the trick. Frontside or backside (blind)
• Switch vs. regular stance
• Grabbed or not

Risk:

• Linking difficult tricks
• Trick difficulty in relation to the course.
• Speed, Power and Flow of trick(s)
• A rider opening their run with a technically difficult trick would be considered high risk.

Risk is also demonstrated by how a rider performs their tricks and whether or not they display a sense of “putting it all on the line” in order to better their opponents.

Intensity:
Judges look for how big or high the rider is taking each of their tricks as well as the speed, power and commitment that goes into the trick.  This is typically noted on the judges sheet by a plus sign, “+”. If the trick was incredibly powerful, and the judge will place 2 plus signs next to it on the judges sheet, “+ +”. The same goes for tricks done small or weak may have a minus “-“ sign.

Variety:

• A variety of tricks performed in a pass is what judges are looking for in order to determine the most versatile rider.  Wakesurfing has categories of tricks such as: airs, turns, carves, tech tricks, etc. Surfing both frontside and backside as well as switch and regular.  A good wakesurf pass should have tricks from each of these categories and be well rounded. This shows a rider is skilled at all types of maneuvers and therefore showing variety in their riding.
• Were the tricks all based on the same trick?
• Were the grabs different?
• Did the rider spin both directions?
• Did the rider show more than one ‘style’ of wakesurfing?

Execution:

• Completion of the Trick – This is essentially how the trick was performed and that the rider is in control. Control and poise during the middle of a trick shows the rider is confident in that trick and thus it is well executed. Control and completion of a trick also means that the rider is performing a trick he/she set out to complete. Example: If a rider attempts to do a 360 and bobbles halfway through the trick and over-spins it shows they are not in control.
• The Landing/Trick execution – This is simply how clean the landing/completion was of the trick. If the rider butt-checks, drags a hand, over rotates to avoid falling, or looks out of control after they have completed a trick this can negatively affect the execution category.
• Perfection – Judges are looking for how “clean” or how perfect EACH trick was performed in the passes.  Judges look at the approach, the body position, rotation of the trick, the axis of the body, head position, clean grabs not slaps, speed to which the trick was performed. A rider completing their routine without falling also demonstrates perfection.
• FLOW:  Flow is when a wakesurfer can execute their tricks together to make them look like they connect smoothly from one to another.  For instance, when a rider lands a trick switch and then approaches the wake to do the next trick in the same switch position. A rider that does not flow well would do things like constantly hopping from switch to regular or vice versa in their transition between tricks, starting the pass late, or finishing a pass early.  Dead water is not showing flow or composition.
• Did the rider customize or adapt tricks…make them their own?
  
  General:
  Creativity of course management and time is crucial in achieving a smooth, fluid, flowing run.  Riders that take the time to plan out their run, plan the path they are going to take will be rewarded in this area.  Riders that can link creative tricks/maneuvers will also be rewarded. Judges will be looking for riders that use up the full time, and length of the course.  Wasted water will reflect negatively towards the rider’s score.
  
  Judges will only score tricks successfully landed. If a rider falls out of the wave after a trick a majority from the judges will determine if the trick counts. In general if a rider comes back forward on the wave after completing a trick it will count as landed, however, execution will be considered. Falls are simply a missed trick and course time is lost.  You will not be judged down for falls, but this can take away from the overall look and flow of a riders run. Riders are allowed 2 falls.  The run ends on 3rd fall. Riders may use two different boards in their run. Boards may be swapped between passes or during a pick up from a fall.  Riders may request transfers on the waves at any point during their run. There is no limit to the number of transfers. There will be no re-rides for miscommunications on transfers.

There will be no spectating from the start dock. Only the current heat and heat that is to follow will be allowed in the dock area.

PLAN YOUR RUN: Traditional Format Info: Subject to ChangeIF NOT COMFORTABLE WITH FEATURE, DO NOT HIT  FLATS – 30% KICKERS – 27% RAILS – 25% COMP – 18% The run starts when the rider leaves the dock and goes until the rider passes the Pool/Rooftop Transfer rail section a second time or on the rider’s second fall (one pick up). The 3/4 marker is the kickers on the second lap. After a rider has passed the kickers a second time, they will not receive another pick up, regardless of falls used. If you drag, tumble up (your hips behind you) your run is over and you risk being disqualified from the entire event.  Hot dog handles are caused by the rider, if you fall your run is over, if you do not fall, you have one lap to reset handle and pickup your run after the hot dog handle occurred. Scores are predetermined by placement! Meaning the points rewarded for each placement are standardized, regardless of gap between runs. If you have an equipment malfunction, please raise hand immediately and return to the starting dock.  Features Only Format Info: Subject to Change IF NOT COMFORTABLE WITH FEATURE, DO NOT HIT 7 Minute Jam Session Subject to Change  KICKERS – 20% POOL – 24% ROOFTOP TRANSFER – 21% NICO & INCLINE – 19% S-RAIL & NESSIE – 16% Times, features and percentages may change after the first rounds, please prepare accordingly. Judges score riders and rank from first to last, no ties in area so if riders do the same trick, judges must delineate by amplitude, grabs, style and so forth. Tricks after the clock are not allowed, riders must be on the features to count trick.  NO outside assistance getting back to the dock, however if a rider removes their board from the lake, they are allowed to change boards in the middle of heat.

UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT

Unsportsmanlike Conduct – Any Athlete or official whose conduct is deemed unsportsmanlike, or who may cause discredit to the WWA, sponsors, or that person’s home country federation, either on or off the contest site during the period of time of the contest may be fined and/or disqualified, as determined by the WWA Chief Judge.  Unsportsmanlike conduct includes, but is not limited to: use of vulgar language in public, public tantrums, not riding to the fullest potential, failure to attend designated functions or events, consuming alcoholic beverages during competition, competing under false pretenses, such as not having a WWA membership, concealing significant injuries or health problems. A rider disqualified in this manner would forfeit prize money for that contest and all points. This paragraph shall not be construed to deny or limit any individual’s legal rights. All fines shall be paid to the World Wake Association. Failure to do so will result in exclusion from any future contests until fine is paid. There will be ZERO tolerance of unsportsmanlike conduct towards any of the event staff.

REVIEWING SCORES

Reviewing Scores:(All Divisions)    1.     There will be no protesting of scores.  A rider may request to look over the Full Heat Results page to see the official scoring and placement of each judge.    2.     If the rider has a question about the scores they may ask the Chief Judge.   3.     The Chief Judge will then review the rider run sheet and score sheets to ensure there are no discrepancies between the judges. If the Chief Judge is satisfied with his/her review, he/she will let the rider know his decision.  If the chief judge finds a discrepancy on the judges score sheet he/she will meet with the judge immediately.  The judge will make sure that the discrepancy is addressed on his sheet and he/she will re-evaluate his scores to make sure his/her scores and placements are correct. If the judge makes a change the chief judge will have the scorekeeper record the change and post new results.  There may or may not be a change in placements after a judge changes his/her score.   4.     If the chief judge evaluates the judge’s sheets and is unsure of a judge’s decision, he/she will meet with the judge immediately and ask them to double check their decision.  If they are certain on their decision, the issue is over.  The results are final.  If the judge makes a change the chief judge will have the scorekeeper record the change and post new results.  There may or may not be a change in placements after a judge changes his/her score.    5.     The Chief Judge will make his/her best efforts to deliver a final decision in a timely manner. The Chief Judge has the final say in all decisions. No rider is allowed to approach the individual judges. Any rider found harassing judges or using profanity during the protest will be subject to the code of conduct and applicable fines.   6.     If a rider would like to educate themselves for the future they may do so after the event is over.  If the rider is present at the end of the competition the chief judge will make his/her best efforts to let the rider speak with the judges.      7.     If a rider has an issue while on the water competing- The rider needs to communicate this to the judges ASAP.  The judges will radio the Chief Judge to discuss the issue.  The Chief Judge will take the proper steps to solve the issue. The rider must state the issue either prior to resuming his/her pass, or, prior to the next athlete beginning their pass.   8.     All judges will make their best efforts to be at the Chief Judge’s station immediately following the last event each day to answer questions.  There may be situations when the judges are forced to leave the site before or right at the end of the event.

EVENT SITE

• Spectating is only allowed in the areas outlined on the map below. There will be no congregating allowed anywhere on OWC’s deck
• Proper cleaning supplies will be available to all event participants, staff, and officials. Cleaning supplies are not limited to and may include hand-washing stations, hand sanitizer, tissues, and cleaning wipes. 
• All staff tents will have clear walls and/or barriers in order to prevent unnecessary contact.
• Spectators and participants will not be allowed to congregate under WWA tents. Participants are able to bring their own tents or umbrellas for shade.
