Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro Set to be a Turning Point in the Wakeboard World Series

Heading into the Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro, analyzing the competitive wake landscape goes beyond current rankings and recent performances. A look on Instagram proves the progression train continues to gain speed with the top 10 regularly hitting some insane new trick or line. It’s exciting; you never know who is going to come out of nowhere with a double or 1080 in their arsenal to cause a major upset.

As we sit today, there is a 55 point spread among the top seven ranked riders on the WWA Wakeboard World Series with five remaining events. There is no playing it safe and as every winning run seems to consist of pure magic. These athletes have departed the realm of simply being really good, redefining what it means and what it takes to be great.

So who do you got? Mike Dowdy is on a hot streak and Harley is in the #1 spot with mind blowing back-up runs to his mind blowing mainrun. Nic Rapa grabbed a big win in Brazil and Shota has everything ittakes cause an upset at the top. Noah Flegel is proving to be more of a freak by the day, Iacconi’s hitting doubles and Cory Teunnissen has 1080’s on lock paired with doubles. This week, Dean Smith posted a double tantrum that looked too easy, making every round scary for anyone that draws him in their heat.

The Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro is set to be the turning point for the WWA Wakeboard World Series with the world of wake focused on every move. Join us July 7-8 on Watts Bar Lake by boat or by land to witness the next generation redefine the sport pass by pass.

Luca Kidd Takes His First Jr. Pro Win at the Malibu WWA Rider Experience West and Regional Championships

West Linn, OR (June 26, 2017) – Exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in two locations, the Malibu WWA Rider Experience West was unforgettable. Hosted by Active Watersports, the community converged on Koppert Lake with cars, tents, and RV’s for Freeride Friday along with Malibu pro athletes to get ready for the WWA West Regional Championships. The stoke was at an all-time high on Saturday with riders in all divisions represented from contest veterans to those making their competitive debut on every board they could get their hands on. Surf Gate Sunday moved to West Linn, OR with a beautiful backdrop to match the perfection of Malibu’s endless surf waves.

“We had an amazing weekend at the first Pacific Northwest Malibu WWA Rider Experience and are excited about all the new faces we saw competing for their very first time! Thank you to Malibu once again and to Active Watersports for being such great hosts,” said WWA Executive Director Corrie Wilson.

The WWA West Regional Championships represented what wake is all about with riders experiencing competition for the first time, making the starting dock a party to meet new friends. Legendary Koppert Lake played the perfect host to the action, creating an amazing combination that felt like part wakeboard contest and part family reunion.

Jr. Pro Men’s rider Luca Kidd (GBR) took his first event win, digging deep after an early fall forcing him to pull out all of the stops against an international field for a score of 90.83. Just missing the top spot, Korea’s Sanhyun Yun scored 89.17 in second with some stylish and technical riding that included 540 mobes and a 900. Kevin Duffy (U.S.A.) rounded out the podium in third with 75.00 points sticking a H/S 720 and tantrum to blind and three mobes.

In the Amateur Wakeskate division, Hunter Smith (CDN) threw down a big shuv and a body varial for the win scoring 70.00. Cole Osborn (WA) placed second with a score of 53.33 after an ollie 360 and shuv followed by Gunnar Henthorn (WA) in third with 45.00 points.

Hannah Treml (WA) and Avery Jo Wylie (WA) put on a show for the crowd in an intense battle for girls division gold.  Tremle took the win with some stylish grabs and a 180 to score 86.67. Avery showed some great board control and excitement along with big wake jumps to earn a second place score of 65.00

We had some first time competitors and experienced veterans coming together for a fun session during the Wakesurf competition. Brad Gearhart (FL) took the win demonstrating use of the entire wave along with an air and a 360 to score 80.00. Josh Russel (OR) carved and snapped his way through two stand up passed to place second with 63.33 points followed by Aiden Scott (OR) in third with a score of 53.33.

Surf Gate Sunday moved to the Willamette River in West Linn, OR for an amazing time shredding behind Malibu’s amazing line of boats. New surfers were hooked, getting first-class instruction from Malibu Pro riders along with some local shredders who dialed in some big tricks. The Malibu WWA Rider Experience heads North to Pleasant Prairie, WI July 14–16 for the next round of the world’s most popular rider development series. Malibu WWA Rider Experience South Showcases Progressive Riding from the Region’s Best in Mooresville, NC

Mooresville, NC (June 19, 2017) – The Malibu WWA Rider Experience South saw the region’s wake community come together in full force for an incredible weekend on Lake Norman hosted by Malibu Boats of Charlotte. Malibu Pro athletes were on hand all weekend long to give riders all-access to the best of the best in instruction and competition behind world-class Malibu Wakesetter and MXZ series boats. Freeride Friday saw amazing weather with everyone from wakeboarding’s hottest up and comers to first-time riders hitting the water to push their skills to the next level. The WWA South Regional Championships went off on Saturday including the Malibu Pro Card Qualifier #3 and all WWA amateur, Jr. Pro, and wakesurf divisions. Surf Gate Sunday kept the stoke high with massive waves of perfection unlike anything else on the water.

“Thank you to Malibu Boats for another great event! We had an awesome turnout and it was great to have the riders and parents so engaged in everything both on and off the water. Our Judges Experience session was a huge success and the riding was all-time! We look forward to seeing everyone next weekend in the West Region,” said WWA Executive Director Corrie Wilson.

Saturday’s WWA Regional Championships was full of firsts and competitive returns with high fives, spills, thrills and double flips. Competing for their chance to represent the south this year at the WWA Wakeboard National Championships, cheers from family and friends on the shoreline had riders super-charged with amazing performances and smiles throughout the day.

In the Boy’s division, Fynn Bullock-Womble (NC) threw down a wrapped KGB and a T/S 720 taking first place with a score of 90.00. In second, Thomas Herman (IN) scored 81.67 followed by local Lake Norman ripper Daniel Johnson (NC) in third with 76.00.

The Masters division saw the competitive return of fan favorite Adam Fields (NC) with his signature style and massive tricks scoring 76.67 for the win. Brian O’Neal (NC) came in second with 50.33 followed by Taylor Jimenez (GA) in third scoring 50.00.

In recent years, progression in the Jr. Women’s division has been unreal with riders taking an aggressive approach to hitting an entirely new realm of tricks. The incredible wake behind the Malibu 23 LSV hosted stylish, technical runs from division stars. Shannon Sahinbas (FL) landed her signature wrapped T/S B/S 360 for a winning score of 63.33. The amazing, multi-talented Mary Morgan Howell (AL) came in second with a score of 53.33 followed by Kate Crews (NC) scoring 33.33 in third.

The Wakesurf competition cranked up the world-famous wave behind the Malibu 22MXZ with a great crew. Beaux Wildman (IN) showed some sick style cracking the lip for the win with a score of 70.00. Kiko Williams (NC) placed second scoring 56.67 and Francisco Cabezas (FL) placed third with 46.67. Ashleigh Nyborg (NC) killed it in the Women’s Wakesurf division throwing a 180 and riding switch for the win scoring 93.33.

The Jr. Pro South Regional Championships saw a crazy final round with Tyler Higham taking his second consecutive win of the season. Higham brought home a winning score of 87.33 going big and technical with his west coast style. Elliot Digney (AUS) put it all together with back-to-back double flips and a KGB 540 scoring 81.33 followed by Luca Kidd (GBR) in third with a score of 67.33.

Surf Gate Sunday had first-time riders shredding the endless Malibu wave, igniting the spark of passion for our life on the water. As the Malibu WWA Rider Experience continues across the nation, our community of wake continues to grow with this unique series dedicated to the progression of all things wake.
