MIKE DOWDY AND NICOLA BUTLER WIN THE 2017 MALIBU VIENNA PRO PRESENTED BY ROCKSTAR ENERGY

Vienna, Austria (September 3, 2017) – Competitive strategy and true grit defined the final day of the Malibu Vienna Pro presented by Rockstar Energy. The world’s best wakeboarders and wakesurfers proved that the rising waters and current of the Danube river were no match for the experience and exceptional talent of riders on a mission for victory. The Malibu M235 was tested and proven today with world-class performance that kept the action cranking. With only one stop remaining on the WWA Wakeboard World Series and Malibu Evolution Pro Series, the intensity continued as overall titles come down to every trick. In the Pro Women’s Wakesurf final, Stacia Bank (USA) brought everything she had with massive airs and powerful turns before getting technical with some 360’s for the win. In second, Tara Kriz (AUT) kept the judges on their toes with some solid combinations followed by Korina Smyrek (SUI) in third who showed some sick style to round out the podium. “Thank you to Malibu Boats and the WWA for a great event in Vienna. Things got exciting as the Danube water level rose over 7ft in 2 days with the fastest current I’ve ever surfed, but the M235 plowed through creating a mighty wave. I was fortunate to land on top. Fun to see Wakesurf friends like Korina Smyrnek and meet many new ones,” said 2017 Malibu Vienna Pro Champion Stacia Bank. The multi-talented Noah Flegel (USA) crushed the Pro Men’s Wakesurf final for the win, hitting a massive B/S bigspin that dropped jaws. Dom Lagace (CDN) placed second, keeping an incredible pace with a mixture of shove-its and spins followed by local hero Markus Lahmer (AUT) in third who threw down big airs in his run. “After all that happened pre-event, I’m stoked to be able to finally make it to Vienna and do well. I’m stoked to win Wakesurf but my main goal was to get the double win; Wakesurf and Wakeboard. Either way, I’m super pumped to walk away with a double podium and to be in a country I’ve never visited. It’s been a blast!” said Malibu Vienna Pro Men’s Wakesurf Champion Noah Flegel. It’s been said that there is something about the Malibu Evolution Pro events that work for Nicola Butler (USA) and today it once again proved to be true. After sweeping the series in 2016 and winning the Malibu Factory Pro this season, Nicola has added a 5th consecutive Evolution Pro event win here at the Malibu Vienna Pro. Battling some harsh water conditions, Nicola scored 88.00 points with a roll-to-blind and a big H/S 540. Meagan Ethell (USA) placed second with a tootsie roll and an indy tantrum for a score of 78.33. Chiara Virag (ITA) placed third with a roll-to-blind and scarecrows both ways for 71.00. “Vienna has been awesome and I’m super stoked on taking the win! Everyone had to bring it today in some tough conditions and I’m just happy it all came together. I’ll see everyone in Japan!” said 2017 Malibu Vienna Pro Champion Nicola Butler. The Pro Men’s final was truly unbelievable with the river and crowd reaching their peak, putting the pressure on the world’s best to perform. Mike Dowdy (USA) took his first Wakeboard World Series event win of the season in style. With various strategies at play, Dowdy threw down his first pass as if it were a sheet of glass on the Danube, landing a Moby Dick, 900, and a double backroll all in his first pass. Pass two saw 720’s and a KGB, earning him a score of 91.67. Harley Clifford (AUS) came in second with 86.00 after landing a T/S 900, tail KGB and a double tantrum. Noah Flegel (USA) is a machine, taking his second podium of the day with a third place Pro Wakeboard finish landing a Moby Dick 540, crow 540, and 900 to score 83.67. “Stoked to take the win at the Vienna Pro. INTENSE COMPETITION UNDERWAY AS MALIBU VIENNA PRO SHOWCASES THE WORLD’S BEST WAKEBOARDERS AND WAKESURFERS BEHIND THE MALIBU M235

Vienna, Austria (September 2, 2017) – Intense wakeboard and wakesurf action has taken over the Danube river this weekend for the Malibu Vienna Pro presented by Rockstar Energy. As the massive wave behind the Malibu M235 took perfect shape, the world’s best wakesurfers kicked off the day with their qualifying rounds of competition. The Pro Men’s Wakeboard quarterfinal and Pro Women’s Wakeboard semifinal rounds had a new level of intensity with every heat having the potential to completely change the WWA Wakeboard World Series landscape. The second stop of the Malibu Evolution Pro Series, this premier event has brought the big stage of wake to Austria for the first time, beginning the final charge towards the overall series podium.

“The crowd has been amazing here at the Malibu Vienna Pro. The conditions are posing a challenge for riders as heavy rain in Germany caused an unexpected increase in current today with some rough water. These riders are all professionals and truly the best in the world. They’re putting on an amazing show and tomorrow’s competition is shaping up to be one you don’t want to miss,” said WWA Chief Judge Mike McComb.

The Pro Women’s Wakesurf opened the day with a field of six taking two into tomorrow’s final round along with two pre-qualified riders. Korina Smyrek (SUI) took the heat one win, linking together a combination of stylish tricks followed by Tara Kriz (GER) who will join her in tomorrow’s final round.

The Pro Men’s Wakesurf competition took two riders out of a field of seven to join our six pre-qualified riders in tomorrow’s final. Paul Krenn (AUT) threw down a smooth run of shoves and 360’s for the heat win, heading to the final along with Andy Schmahl (GER) who placed second. Making a late arrival to Vienna, pre-qualified surfer Noah Flegel entertained the crowd with a mind-blowing surf exhibition before taking the water in his wakeboard qualifying heat.

A packed shoreline cheered on the the world’s top wakeboard athletes behind the world-class Malibu M235 as they battled the current of the Danube. The action never stopped with four Pro Men quarterfinal heats hitting the water ahead of three heats of Pro Women. In heat one, Mike Dowdy (USA) put down a calculated run for a winning score of 77.67, throwing his late grab cork 720, tail grab Moby Dick and a T/S 900. Heat two saw Cory Teunissen (AUS) land a crow 540 and a B/S 720 to win his heat scoring 87.67. In heat three, Nic Rapa (AUS) showed his mental toughness in the rough water, charging the wake to take the top spot with 90.33, landing a B/S 720 and a perfect blind Pete Rose. Harley Clifford (AUS) played the conditions perfectly, keeping it clean and conservative with an indy tantrum-to-blind, T/S 900 and a H/S 720 to score 91.00.

Pro Women’s heat one saw Malibu athlete Tarah Mikacich (USA) take the win showing her toughness and consistency in any conditions, scoring 75.67  with a wrapped KGB and T/S front roll. A solid run in heat two earned Nicola Butler (USA) the top spot with a H/S 540 and a stomped roll-to-blind to earn a score of 84.00. Jamie Lopina (USA) took the win in heat three scoring 78.67, stomping regular and cab 540’s a big T/S front roll.

“The conditions were definitely challenging on the Danube River here in Vienna. But I’m always happy to get to ride the awesome wake of the M235. For me there was a lot of uncertainty going into semis today because my board bag was missing for four days, but it arrived just a few riders before my turn! I was so happy to get my own gear and I’m looking forward to a great finals tomorrow at the Vienna Pro!,” said Malibu rider Tarah Mikacich.

The final day of action at the Malibu Vienna Pro begins at 10:00 a.m. CEST on Sunday, September 3rd.

Wakeboarding Hall of Fame to Induct Six New Members in 2017

Orlando, FL September 2, 2017: The Wakeboarding Hall of Fame will induct six new members on September 7^th at the Surf Expo trade show in Orlando, Florida. The wakeboarding Hall of Fame was established in 2014 to honor those that have made worthy contributions to wake sports and to preserve wakeboarding’s rich history. Past inductees include industry pioneers, contributors as well as outstanding athletes.

This year’s Wakeboarding Hall of Fame induction class includes some of the sport’s most influential and notable visionaries from wakeboarding’s earliest years before it was accepted as the popular action sport it is today. Each year the Wakeboarding Hall of Fame Induction Committee fields outside applications, offers it’s own suggestions and through a panel of veteran industry insiders confirms the prestigious class of inductees that will be bestowed the eternal honor of becoming a Wakeboarding Hall of Fame member.

The esteemed 2017 Wakeboarding Hall of Fame Inductees are as follows: Forging athletes Scott Byerly, Erich Schmaltz and Tara Hamilton Wynne, promotional superstar Sonja Scheffler Weinacker, and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement acknowledgements for Bill McCaffray and Pat McElhinney.
