Stakes Are High as WWA Wakeboard World Series Leaders Head into the 2018 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships Presented by Rockstar Energy

MONROE, WA (July 24, 2018)– Headed to the Pacific Northwest, this week kicks off one of the most important Wakeboard World Series (WBWS) events of the season with the 2018 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships presented by Rockstar Energy. Pulled by the 5x Wakeboard and 4x Wakesurf boat of the year the Super Air Nautique G23, this event could be a turning point in the WWA Wakeboard World Series rankings. A look on social media proves the progressive movement continues to gain speed post Stop #4 in Knoxville, TN with the top ten riders in both divisions hitting new tricks and not being afraid to show it.

As we sit today, there is a 60-point spread among the top four ranked riders on the Men’s WWA Wakeboard World Series with only one remaining event after the Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, WBWS Stop #5. With the final stop, the 2018 Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championships just over thirty days away, the riders know there is now no place for playing it safe.

A shuffling in the rankings took place in Knoxville, TN, as Tony Iacconi moved up one spot into 4thranked position after his third place podium finish, solidifying 295 points on the WBWS overall rankings. The WBWS 3rdranked rider, Cory Teunissen put on a huge show so far this season putting up some massive double cab rolls, riding on the heels of Nic Rapa in second place.

Nic Rapa came away with his second Factory Pro title gaining valuable ground in the rankings, however, his final score wasn’t quite enough to take thetop spot on the leaderboard. Sitting in the top spot on the WBWS rankings, Harley Clifford remains focused as he heads to the WWA Wakeboard National Championships, an event he has claimed multiple Nationals Titles. Despite his second place finish at the Factory Pro and with Rapa only 20 points behind Clifford on the rankings, the pressure remains to perform to his full potential.

The Women have been absolutely charging it this season and the shuffling of the overall rankings in Knoxville can speak to it. Jamie Lopina torched the fire at the Factory Pro, throwing down the only crowmobe seen in the Women’s final. This performance moved Lopina up two spots on the leaderboard heading to Washington with a solid 5thspot on the WBWS rankings. Dallas Friday, known for her clean tricks and signature style sits 4thon the rankings, just 30 points short of Zahra Kell holding down the 3rdranked spot.

Going into the Factory Pro a few weeks back, Meagan Ethell was a mere 5 points behind Nicola Butler with the two going head to head, proving to the fans that women do in fact run the world. Ethell’s win sent her into 1stplace on the rankings as the reigning WWA Wakeboard National Champion looks toward another National Title this week.

The ranking’s shakeups prove that with two stops to go, the race for the Title is far from over, setting the stage for a showdown at Lake Tye Park at the 2018 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships. Stay tuned all week long for updates from the heartbeat of the sport with athletes from around the globe focused on driving progression.

Nautique Boats Announces 2019 Nautique Wakesurf Series Towed Exclusively Behind the 4x Wakesurf Boat of the Year, the Super Air Nautique G23

ORLANDO, FL (July 20, 2018) – Holding true to the reputation of always putting athletes first, Nautique Boats and The World Wake Association (WWA) are excited to announce the 2019 Nautique Wakesurf Series. The Nautique Wakesurf Series will build on the monumental efforts of the 2018 Nautique USA National Wakesurf Championships providing innovative formats for competition across the globe in a family-friendly environment. Dedicated to progressing the sport for years to come, the 2018 Nautique USA National Wakesurf Championships is the first of many steps in the plan to evolve the sport of wakesurfing on a global level.

While the release of the WWA’s newly developed wakesurf format has been positively received by the world of wakesurfing, the 2019 Nautique Wakesurf Series will continue the exponential growth of the competitive side of the sport. The 2019 Nautique Wakesurf Series will carry out the newly introduced rider-developed format, rewarding the uniqueness of both skim and surf styles equally in the amateur and pro divisions alike. Through use of the WWA’s proven heat system, a more defined placement and advancement for the athlete will allow competitors a fair advancement throughout the series.

“We love wakesurfing for the family-friendly and inclusive vibe it creates, and we are looking forward to facilitating the competitive progression with the new Nautique Wakesurf Series,” stated Nautique President, Greg Meloon. “When we introduced the Nautique Wake Series back in 2014, we recognized that professional and amateur athletes competing at the same venue would rapidly progress the sport of wakeboarding at every competitive level.  Building on this experience with the WWA, the Wakesurf Series will allow wakesurfing the same opportunities for growth at all levels while providing a premium experience for the participants.”

The 2019 Nautique Wakesurf Series will be comprised of six of the world’s most prestigious wakesurf events. The world’s top professional and amateur athletes will participate in this newly developed rider-developed platform to showcase progression and define themselves as the sport’s elite.

“This is a giant step by the WWA in a continued effort to help foster future growth in the sport of wakesurfing,” said WWA President, Shannon Starling. “Establishing this series alongside Nautique greatly adds to the progression of wakesurfing as well as establishes the largest single series the sport has seen to date. This is a huge win for the industry, sport, riders, and fans of wake worldwide.”

Towed exclusively behind the 4x Wakesurf Boat of the Year, the Super Air Nautique G23, the 2019 Wakesurf Series will include six stops spanning across the globe.

THE ALL NEW 2018 NAUTIQUE USA WAKESURF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMAT

Nautique Boats and the World Wake Association (WWA) have worked with an exclusive panel of wakesurfing’s top athletes and officials in an effort to create the next generation of competitive wakesurfing format, judging criteria and divisions. The 2018 Nautique USA Wakesurf National Championships will be the first event to showcase this new format, propelling a positive impact to the world of wakesurfing for many seasons to follow.

“Through our partnership with Nautique, we are taking steps in an effort to excel the sport of wakesurfing,” said WWA President, Shannon Starling. “Together, with an elite group of legends and leaders in the sport, we’ve created a progressive format that encourages flow and creativity to emerge in an atmosphere that is competitive and fun. Whether it be an updated use of the D.R.I.V.E system, simplified scoring or proper use of the heat system, we are confident the athletes and spectators alike should see a more understandable and consistent environment in the sport.”

Heat System

  • Consistent use of WWA’s proven heat system, will provide a more defined placement and advancement system for the athletes. The heat system creates a more equal competition, to judge and determine the top athletes. Click Here for Official Format

All 3 Judges Writing Down Tricks

  • There will be three judges all writing down the rider’s run. The judges will analyze the rider’s runs based off of the D.R.I.V.E criteria and score them accordingly. Each judge will make marks using their own shorthand to produce three accounts of what happened on the water. As a result, the judges should feel more confident in making decisions between runs that are close, and consequently less issues and disagreements should occur. Wakesurfing’s top athletes and officials have agreed that they would rather write down the runs using their own marks and shorthand as it helps them make the best decision at the end of the heat. Click Here for Official Format
“I’m really excited about the new format. I think it will put the riders and the judges on the same page and it will give the best rider of the day the best chance to get the win,” commented 7x WWA Wakeskate World Champion and world-renowned Wakeboard and Wakesurf official, Reed Hanson. “Having judged numerous wake events across varying disciplines, it only makes sense to transition the wakesurf judging criteria to better mimic a system that has worked for decades amongst other action sports. We would be doing the sport and the athletes a disservice by not better adapting the format.”

Simplified Scoring – One all encompassing score from each judge

  • In an effort to simplify the competitive side of the sport for the athletes, judges, and fans alike, one final score will be used from each judge as compared to multiple scores amongst each of the judging criteria elements. Click Here for Official Format

D.R.I.V.E System – Keeping the ‘Risk’ in D.R.I.V.E

  • Risk, among the other elements to the D.R.I.V.E system is important to acknowledge when judging wakesurfing. There is risk involved with wherethe rider places certain tricks within their run and how they are linkedtogether. There is risk in doing certain tricks with fins or doing certain tricks without fins. The bottom line is risk is just as important to acknowledge when judging a run as the rest of the criteria, and it should no longer be overlooked.  Click Here for Official Format
“With any sport, proper use of a scoring system is crucial for an athlete to progress in competition. By acknowledging the “risk” factor as an important piece of the D.R.I.V.E system when judging wakesurfing, we will see competitive wakesurfing evolve,” commented WWA Executive Director, Corrie Wilson. “We are in the midst of a defining time for the sport of wakeand I couldn’t be more stoked to work alongside the top athletes and officials that share that same drive to give wakesurfing the push it’s been looking for.”

Combining Skim & Surf Style Disciplines

  • Athletes will compete in a unique rider-developed format, featuring one discipline that combines skim and surf styles in both the amateur and pro divisions. This combination acknowledges that certain tricks are harder on certain boards and the event officials will take into account all aspects when scoring these riders. For example, a shuv with big surf style fins in most cases will be harder than a skim style board with no fins.  Likewise, big airs will be harder for skim boarders with smaller fins vs. a surf style board with huge fins.
    • Riders also have the opportunity to ride one style board one pass and another style the next pass – providing endless possibilities of creativity. Click Here for Official Format
“As a guy who has been in competitive wakesurfing since it started, this new format and approach is a breath of fresh air! I have always been a fan of ride what you want but it’s one division,” said Nautique team rider, Drew Danielo. “This new format combats the old-school mentality that the surf and skim styles are different and can’t be judged together properly.  No longer are we being judged on how many tricks you can jam into a run but how well and stylish are you executing tricks and the best use of equipment.Bring your favorite board and be ready to have fun!”
The Course
“Combining the best wave, qualified judging, a revolutionizing new formatand the love of wakesurfing – this new approach will definitely give competitive wakesurfing a fresh new feel,” said Nautique team rider, Jodi Grassman.

LUCA KIDD WINS THE MALIBU JR. PRO OVERALL SERIES AND THE MALIBU RIDER EXPERIENCE NORTH

Detroit, MI (July 15, 2018) – The Malibu WWA Rider Experience North landed in Michigan this weekend showcasing everything from first-time riders to career pinnacles with Luca Kidd owning the overall Mabilu Jr. Pro Series title. A series like no other, the 2018 Malibu Rider Experience includes a range of events, with four stops throughout North America, and one stop left in Canada next month. Freeride Friday, Surfgate Sunday, the Malibu Pro Card Qualifier, and the WWA Wakeboard Regional Championships are held at each stop, offering riders an opportunity to practice, progress, and have a blast on the water.

Eager riders arrived at White Lake Inn on Freeride Friday for a chance to prepare their competition run and receive coaching from Malibu pro athletes Brain Grubb, Chad Sharpe, Raph Derome, and Charli Shore. Hosted by Tommy’s of Detroit and pulled behind the world-class Malibu 24 MXZ, riders experienced the best wake in the business alongside some of the top pros in wakeboarding.

Contrary to the previous three Surfgate Sundays on the Malibu Rider Experience tour, the Northern region switched it up for a Surfgate Saturday. Ronix brought their full line of wakesurfers for riders to demo while Malibu Boats, Rockstar Energy, Best Flag, and Tommy’s of Detroit provided the onshore entertainment with giveaways and demonstrations. Malibu’s revolutionary Surf Gate technology powered a full day of wakesurfing action behind the Malibu 24 MXZ, plus some additional practice runs before Sunday’s WWA Wakeboard Regional Championships and the Malibu Jr. Pro Overall Series finale.

“We came to White Lake after hearing there were professionals out here making dreams come true for children,” said Michigan-local, Craig L. Smith. “My daughter Alyssa came out and finally landed her 180s and got to ride doubles with Luca Kidd. Not only that, it’s been a dream of mine, since my daughter was born, to ride doubles with her. Today, myself and my daughter rode doubles and it was a dream come true, something I’ve been looking forward to for 10 years. It was a great time and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

On Sunday, all the action moved south to Lyons Ski Club in Wixom, for the 2018 Malibu WWA Regional Championships North presented by Rockstar Energy. The Indiana-based Wildman family dominated the podiums with Beaux Wildman (IL) taking first place in both the Boys Wakeboard and Men’s Wakesurf divisions, his brother Noah Wildman (IL) placing second in the Jr. Pro Men division, and their father Josh Wildman (IL) winning first place in the Veterans division.

Luca Kidd (GBR), the undefeated Jr. Pro Men’s champion, took his 4th consecutive win, sweeping the Malibu Jr. Pro Series. His impressive nose grab crowmobe 540 and nose grab T/S 720 earned a score of 89.00. Noah Wildman (USA) followed close behind throwing a clean H/S 720 and a huge Moby Dick, scoring an 80.00 for his first Jr. Pro podium finish. Rounding out the podium in third was Tyler Worrall (USA) with a 75.67.

A $20,000 prize purse was on the line in the Malibu Jr. Pro Series. Unique to typical payouts, Malibu provides $15,000 in prize money to the top five overall winners, plus an additional $5,000 in travel reimbursements to the top five to the upcoming 2018 WWA Wakeboard National and World Championships. Luca Kidd (GBR) came out on top of the series with 400 points overall. Kevin Duffy (USA), Bryce Grey (AUS), Joey Gallagher (USA), and Tyler Worrall (USA) also made it into the top five after the summer-long, four-stop series.

CLICK HERE TO SEE MALIBU JR. PRO SERIES OVERALL RANKINGS

“I am super happy with how the event went,” said Luca Kidd. “Everyone threw down so it wasn’t easy to win. There we’re so many rippers out there like Joey Gallagher, Thomas Herman, Tyler Worrall, and Kevin Duffy. All those boys were ripping so I was just stoked I could hold it for the fourth stop and end up taking the Malibu Jr. Pro Series overall win.”

Luca Kidd is the first rider in the Malibu Jr. Pro Series history to win each of the four stops. Previous Malibu Jr. Pro Series winners include Nic Rapa, Cory Teunissen, and Tyler Higham, each having extremely successful professional careers to date. Needless to say, the future is bright for Luca Kidd.

The Malibu Rider Experience goes international next month heading to Ontario, Canada August 10th-12th. As the final stop of the 2018, we’re looking forward to new faces and big wins as we cross the border and wrap up the sixth year of the series.
